Second-seeded Fernando Gonzalez was in supreme form against Chilean compatriot Paul Capdeville, striking five aces and winning 74 per cent of service points for a 6-1, 6-2 win in 52 minutes.

Gonzalez is hoping to compete at the Tennis Masters Cup for the second time in his career, having been brought in as an alternate during the 2005 edition in Shanghai. Currently No. 11 in the ATP 2007 Race, he has a 26-17 record with runs to the finals at the Australian Open (l. to Federer) and ATP Masters Series Rome (l. to Nadal) this year.

The 27-year-old will meet No. 6 seed Hyung-Taik Lee in the quarterfinals Lee set up an opportunity to match his 2006 semifinal performance, by knocking out Bjorn Phau of Germany 7-6(4), 6-1.
